Sri Lanka’s MICE Ambition: A B2B Opportunity in the Making

Sri Lanka is no longer content to be known merely as a leisure paradise. The island nation is executing a carefully calibrated strategy to capture a meaningful share of the lucrative MICE market—and the numbers suggest this is a story B2B travel professionals cannot afford to ignore.
The Target: 20% of Arrivals by 2026
By 2026, Sri Lanka aims to secure 20% of total tourist arrivals through MICE activities, according to the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau’s first-ever three-year roadmap launched in November 2023. This represents an 11% increase in MICE arrivals from 2023 levels, driven by an unprecedented public-private sector collaboration.
The ambition is backed by real momentum. Sri Lanka welcomed over 1.01 million tourists between January and May 2026, with India contributing 245,981 arrivals—a positive trend that underscores the country’s recovery. Tourism earnings surpassed USD 3.2 billion in 2025, and the MICE segment now accounts for approximately 10% of all tourist arrivals.
Sri Lanka is trying to turn MICE from a supporting segment into a major pillar of destination growth, with India positioned at the centre of the strategy.
The Venue Ecosystem: From Colombo to Jaffna
The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo remains the anchor venue—Asia’s first purpose-built convention centre, with a seating capacity of 1,600 and parking for 2,500 vehicles. It serves as the primary venue for large international conferences and trade shows.
But the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau is actively decentralising MICE activity beyond Colombo. The Northern Province has been identified as a promising destination for business tourism, with a focus on markets within South India that share cultural affinity. The inaugural Jaffna MICE Expo in November-December 2023 showcased this potential, attracting 170 potential MICE buyers from India, with 40 selected for the hosted buyer programme.

BMICH remains the anchor for major conferences, trade shows and large-scale business events.
Jaffna
The Northern Province is being developed as a distinctive business-tourism proposition with South India in focus.
South India
Cultural proximity and strong connectivity create a natural source-market opportunity for Northern Sri Lanka.
“Sri Lanka is an ideal MICE destination due to its close proximity and strong connectivity with India, making it a cost-effective and attractive choice for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.”
Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman, Sri Lanka Convention BureauThe India Connection: A Market Within Reach
India is not just a source market—it is the engine of Sri Lanka’s MICE strategy. In 2025, Sri Lanka recorded 531,511 Indian tourists, representing 22% of total arrivals. Connectivity is robust: SriLankan Airlines operates 90 weekly flights connecting Sri Lanka with nine Indian cities, supplemented by daily services from IndiGo and Air India to Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai.
The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau concluded a multi-city MICE roadshow in May 2026 across Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai, engaging MICE specialists, wedding planners, professional conference organisers, and corporate buyers. A 24-member delegation of Sri Lankan tour operators and hoteliers participated in these roadshows, which featured dedicated B2B sessions and cultural performances.
The combination of geographic proximity, air connectivity and dedicated trade engagement gives Sri Lanka a direct route into India’s expanding corporate and incentive travel ecosystem.
This aligns with the wider regional importance of India-focused destination outreach, as tourism boards across Asia compete for India’s outbound MICE and leisure demand.
The Flagship Event: SL MICE Expo 2026
The Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026, now in its sixth edition, is scheduled for October 5–9 in Colombo. Organised by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, the event will bring together MICE professionals, destination experts, event organisers, and hospitality partners for B2B meetings, networking sessions, and destination promotion programmes.
The expo represents a critical platform for Sri Lanka to showcase its evolving MICE infrastructure and attract international business events.

The Bottom Line for B2B Professionals
Sri Lanka’s MICE sector is not a nascent experiment—it is a structured, state-backed growth initiative with clear targets, measurable milestones, and a strategic focus on India as the primary growth engine.
For tour operators, DMCs, and corporate travel specialists, the opportunity is twofold: first, to develop packaged MICE offerings that leverage Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity and destination appeal; second, to establish partnerships with the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and its network of venues and service providers.
The island’s proximity to India, excellent connectivity, and genuine hospitality proposition—combined with the Bureau’s aggressive marketing push—position Sri Lanka as a credible, cost-effective alternative to established MICE destinations in the region. The question for B2B professionals is not whether to engage, but how quickly.
