South Sudan Secures First World Heritage Site

South Sudan has received its first World Heritage inscription with the recognition of the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape. Covering approximately 12 million hectares, the protected area includes two national parks and the wildlife corridors connecting them. An aerial survey completed in 2024 estimated that around six million antelope migrate across the landscape each year, making it the world’s largest known terrestrial mammal migration. The recognition could help South Sudan build a stronger nature-tourism proposition while attracting conservation funding and international attention. However, tourism growth will depend on wildlife protection, infrastructure, community participation, visitor safety and careful management of the sensitive ecosystem.
