World Cup Fails to Lift Overall US International Arrivals
Hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events is often expected to deliver a major tourism boost. However, the latest travel data shows that the US International Arrivals market did not experience the anticipated surge during June, despite the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup.
International visitor numbers from overseas declined by 1.8% year-on-year to 2.8 million, while foreign international air passenger arrivals increased by only 0.2%, indicating that tournament-related travel was not enough to offset broader declines from key source markets.
Mixed Performance Across International Markets
Several countries recorded strong growth in travel to the United States. Visitor arrivals from Ecuador increased by more than 50%, while Colombia recorded a 21.4% rise. Arrivals from the United Kingdom also grew by nearly 17%, reflecting healthy demand from selected international markets.
However, these gains were outweighed by significant declines elsewhere. South Korean arrivals dropped by 30.9%, while visitors from Germany declined by around 20%, limiting overall growth in inbound tourism.
Hotel Performance Remains Soft
Although host cities welcomed football fans from around the world, hotel occupancy remained below expectations across many World Cup destinations. On the positive side, card spending increased by 5%, suggesting that visitors who travelled for the tournament spent more on dining, entertainment, and local experiences.
The figures demonstrate that major sporting events can increase visitor spending without necessarily generating substantial growth in total international arrivals.
Looking Ahead
As the tournament progresses, tourism authorities and travel businesses will continue monitoring visitor trends to assess the long-term economic impact of the FIFA World Cup.
For destinations, the challenge remains converting global event visibility into sustained tourism growth beyond the competition itself.
