India’s hotel sector gets a potentially significant GST lifeline
(“proposed/under consideration”)
The GST Council is expected to consider reforms that could improve input-tax-credit treatment for hotels, particularly properties below the ₹7,500 room-rate threshold.
The proposed changes could extend ITC to hotel rooms and associated services such as restaurants, spas and gyms, although the precise policy outcome should be treated as pending until the Council formally announces it.
This is important because hotel taxation has long been an industry lobbying issue.
Why it matters: if implemented, greater credit availability could improve hotel cost efficiency, investment economics and pricing transparency, particularly in the budget and midscale segments. The broader hotel expansion beyond India’s major metros makes the economics of hotel development particularly relevant.
