India Plans New Tourism Hubs to Ease Pressure on Popular Destinations
India is working to expand tourism beyond overcrowded hotspots by developing lesser-known destinations and creating new travel circuits. Destinations in the Northeast, Lahaul-Spiti, Khajjiar, Varkala, Tawang, Unakoti, Ladakh, and Pangong have gained visibility as travellers increasingly explore new regions.
The strategy includes developing nearby smaller destinations with better hotels, amenities, roads, and private sector participation. This approach aims to reduce pressure on popular tourist centres while encouraging longer stays and wider economic benefits for local communities.
A larger destination-development plan is also being prepared, with the aim of creating globally benchmarked tourism destinations across states. These hubs may include attractions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, entertainment zones, and activities spread over large land parcels, helping India build more complete tourism ecosystems.
