India’s Outbound Surge Sparks Value-for-Money Reckoning for Domestic Hotels: Tourism Secretary
Rising Indian incomes are fueling an outbound travel boom, but returning travelers are increasingly benchmarking overseas hospitality, infrastructure, and pricing against domestic offerings, Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar warned at PATA India Chapter’s 56th Annual General Meeting. He noted that Indians visiting Thailand, Vietnam, and Dubai return home comparing the value they received abroad with hotel costs in India. “When Indians travel to Thailand, when they travel to Vietnam, they travel to Dubai, and what they get for the money they spend, when they come back and see the cost of the hotels in India, they come back and compare,” Kumar said. This value-for-money gap poses a competitive challenge for Indian hotels and destination marketers, while simultaneously creating significant opportunities for domestic tour operators and outbound travel businesses. The observation underscores a pivotal moment for India’s hospitality sector to recalibrate pricing and experience delivery.
