Malaysia’s surprise Formula 1 return creates a tourism case study
The relocated Bahrain Grand Prix brought Formula 1 back to Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit for the first time since 2017, running from 2–4 October.
Malaysia Airports expected more than 200,000 spectators across the three-day event, with daily crowds potentially exceeding 100,000. KLIA warned passengers about congestion and limited parking and urged visitors to use rail and other public transport.
Why B2B matters: this is a textbook demonstration of sports tourism’s ability to create sudden demand for rooms, flights, transfers, restaurants and ancillary experiences.
It also shows why tourism boards increasingly compete for major events not simply for ticket revenue, but for the entire visitor economy. Malaysia’s broader India-focused tourism outreach demonstrates how the country is continuing to compete for international demand.
