Vietnam Airlines Opens Direct Route to Colombo, Tapping into Surging Demand

Vietnam Airlines officially launched its direct route between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo, Sri Lanka, becoming the first Vietnamese carrier to connect to South Asia. The route, operating three times weekly, is a strategic response to skyrocketing passenger demand. The inaugural flight on August 16 recorded a 100% load factor.

Data underscores the opportunity: passenger traffic between Vietnam and Sri Lanka reached over 38,000 in 2025, a 17.5% increase year-on-year, with Q1 2026 traffic surging over 136% compared to the previous year. The direct connection slashes travel time and positions Ho Chi Minh City as a stronger regional hub, adding further momentum to Asia-Pacific aviation and regional connectivity.
