Netflix and Incredible India Turn Screen Stories into Real-World Journeys
A new digital collaboration will help travellers discover the Indian destinations, cultures and landscapes featured in popular Netflix productions.
A memorable film or series can do more than entertain. It can make viewers curious about a landscape, introduce them to an unfamiliar culture and, sometimes, inspire them to plan an actual journey.
Recognising this connection between storytelling and travel, the Ministry of Tourism has strengthened its collaboration with Netflix by integrating an “As Seen on Netflix” feature into the Incredible India digital platform. The initiative is designed to help travellers discover Indian destinations featured in Netflix films and series and turn their on-screen curiosity into real-world travel experiences.
The announcement formed part of a special event held at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi on August 5, 2026, marking ten years of Netflix in India. The programme was organised by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Netflix.
It brought together Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Netflix Co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos for a discussion on how authentic stories can strengthen cultural understanding, destination awareness and India’s global influence.
From Watching a Destination to Visiting It
The new integration will connect Netflix-inspired travel discovery with the Incredible India platform. Travellers will be able to explore destinations associated with stories depicting India’s landscapes, wildlife, festivals, heritage, traditions and communities.
The idea reflects a change already visible in travel behaviour. Audiences increasingly encounter destinations through entertainment before they see them in a brochure or tourism campaign. A mountain village, historic neighbourhood, forest reserve or regional festival shown on screen can become the starting point for a future itinerary.
“Cinema is more than entertainment; it is a bridge to culture, heritage and tourism,” Shekhawat said at the event. He noted that Indian stories have the potential to encourage viewers around the world to experience the places and traditions behind them.
The partnership is not limited to placing destinations on a webpage. Earlier in 2026, the Ministry of Tourism said that Incredible India and Netflix would curate ten short promotional videos during the year, covering themes such as food, festivals, adventure, wildlife and natural beauty. Two films focusing on Indian culture and cuisine were presented at ITB Berlin in March.
At the New Delhi event, the partners also showcased a jointly developed film highlighting India’s biodiversity and wildlife-tourism experiences. A separate film created through Netflix’s collaboration with the Ministry of Culture celebrated the country’s cultural heritage.
An Opportunity for India’s Tourism Industry
For tour operators, destination management companies and local tourism businesses, the initiative could create new opportunities to develop itineraries around places receiving greater visibility through streaming content.
However, the strongest products will need to offer more than a visit to a filming location. Travellers inspired by a story may also want to understand the region’s food, architecture, crafts, history and everyday life.
Local guides, homestays, cultural interpreters and community-based experiences can therefore play an important role in transforming screen recognition into meaningful travel.
The collaboration could also help bring attention to destinations beyond India’s traditional tourism circuits. A lesser-known destination featured in a widely watched production can suddenly become visible to audiences in several countries.
The travel industry’s challenge will be to convert that visibility into well-managed itineraries without overwhelming sensitive destinations or reducing local culture to a photo opportunity.
Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar emphasised that authentic narratives can influence destination choices, encourage sustainable tourism and create economic opportunities for local communities.
He also highlighted the growing role of government partnerships with creative industries, digital platforms and emerging technologies in changing how destinations are discovered.
Storytelling Must Remain Authentic
The real success of the initiative will depend on the connection between the story audiences see and the experience they eventually encounter.
Travellers inspired by films and series often arrive with strong expectations. Tourism boards and operators must therefore provide accurate information about accessibility, permits, seasonality, local customs and environmental restrictions.
Screen-inspired tourism should support the places and people behind the stories rather than simply increase visitor numbers.
The Netflix and Incredible India collaboration represents a more experience-led approach to destination marketing. Instead of presenting India only through conventional promotional messages, it uses characters, emotions and narratives to build curiosity.
The approach reflects the broader movement towards experiential cultural tourism, where travellers increasingly want to participate in the traditions and stories of a destination rather than simply observe them.
It also demonstrates how visual storytelling and content-driven travel behaviour are influencing the way destinations are discovered, marketed and eventually experienced.
A beautiful location may first capture a viewer’s attention. But it is the human story surrounding that location that can inspire someone to book a journey.
By connecting those stories with practical destination discovery, the initiative could help India convert its growing global visibility on screen into deeper cultural engagement and responsible tourism on the ground.
