Nepal Proposes Biometric ID for India Travel

Nepal has formally asked India to recognise its biometric National Identity card as a valid document for cross-border journeys. Under the proposal, Nepali citizens would be able to use the card alongside passports and citizenship certificates while travelling between the two neighbouring countries. The measure has not yet been approved and will require a bilateral decision before implementation. If accepted, it could simplify movement for families, workers, students, traders and tourists who regularly cross the open India–Nepal border. The proposal also reflects Nepal’s effort to modernise travel documentation through secure biometric identification while strengthening people-to-people and tourism connectivity with India.
