WTTC Dialogue Puts Public-Private Partnerships at Centre of Tourism Competitiveness

Public-private collaboration is emerging as a key factor in determining how destinations compete for travellers, investment and tourism businesses. This was a central message from the Global Leaders Dialogue held in Valletta as part of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 26th Global Summit.

Ministers and business leaders from 24 countries discussed how destinations can improve competitiveness through better connectivity, easier travel, investment, regulation and stronger cooperation between governments and businesses.

The discussions also examined the changing traveller journey, from visas and border procedures to technology, transportation, hospitality and logistics. With biometric borders and AI-enabled visa systems developing rapidly, the conversation increasingly centres on how destinations can combine security with a smoother visitor experience.

Investment was another major focus. Participants discussed whether traditional incentives such as tax breaks and special economic zones remain sufficient, or whether regulatory speed, infrastructure, transparency and policy certainty are becoming more important to investors.

The message is particularly relevant for emerging tourism destinations. Competing successfully will increasingly require governments and private companies to work together on the entire tourism ecosystem rather than treating promotion, infrastructure and investment as separate priorities.
