India’s international tourism opportunity remains substantial
INDIA: Recent Agoda data shows accommodation searches from European travellers for India during July-August 2026 increased 14% year-on-year, making India the fastest-growing Asian destination among the leading markets measured. The UK remained India’s largest European source market, while New Delhi, Mumbai and Goa topped destination searches. Slovakia, Croatia and Ireland recorded particularly strong increases in search interest.
The positive demand signal comes at a time when India has been actively strengthening the fundamentals of international tourism. The country restored all tourist visas in 2026, a move expected to support inbound tourism, airlines, hospitality and tour operators.
India is also continuing to build international market visibility. At ITB Berlin, the country used its global tourism showcase to target European demand while emphasising connectivity, experiential tourism and stronger bilateral travel flows.
WTTC estimates that India’s Travel & Tourism sector generated US$263.6 billion for the economy in 2025 and supported 46.2 million jobs, while international visitor spending has substantial room for further growth.
The opportunity extends beyond traditional leisure tourism. India is simultaneously strengthening its MICE positioning, luxury travel proposition and destination infrastructure.
Why it matters: Demand signals are strengthening, but converting search interest into arrivals will depend on connectivity, visa facilitation, destination marketing, infrastructure and consistent visitor experience.
