Bangkok’s floods put destination resilience under the spotlight
Bangkok declared all 50 districts disaster areas following intense rainfall, with reports of approximately 300 mm of rain in less than two days and flooding reaching around 60 cm in some locations. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports remained operational, but road access created difficulties for travellers, hotel staff and tourism businesses.
The immediate tourism challenge was less about airport closure and more about last-mile connectivity—getting passengers from airports to hotels and ensuring staff, supplies and transfers could move around the city.
B2B takeaway: Destination resilience is increasingly an operational issue for hotels, DMCs, airlines and tour operators—not simply a government responsibility.
