Delhi Plans Stronger Push for Festivals, Heritage Walks and Night Economy

Delhi is preparing to strengthen its identity as a cultural and tourism destination through festivals, creative events and heritage-led experiences.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority and the Delhi government’s tourism department to prepare actionable plans for promoting the capital’s heritage, art and design. The proposal includes developing globally recognisable cultural events through public-private partnerships and using existing public spaces for artistic and creative activities.

The move builds on Delhi’s efforts to emerge as a major cultural and event-tourism destination. Events such as the International Film Festival of Delhi have already demonstrated how large cultural programmes can attract visitors while supporting hotels, restaurants, transport providers and local businesses.

A major focus will be strengthening Delhi’s night economy. Well-managed evening markets, performances, food experiences and cultural programmes could encourage visitors to spend more time in the city. International examples show how festivals and after-dark attractions can extend tourism activity beyond conventional daytime sightseeing.

The proposed expansion of heritage walks could also help travellers discover Delhi’s monuments, neighbourhoods, crafts and living traditions in a more personal way. Such experiences can create opportunities for guides, artists, performers and small tourism enterprises.

For the travel industry, Delhi’s growing event-led tourism market could support new packages combining festival entry, accommodation, guided walks, dining and local transport. The availability of regulated bed-and-breakfast accommodation will also be important as the city seeks to welcome more domestic and international visitors.
