Andhra Pradesh’s Aviation Milestone: PM Modi to Inaugurate Bhogapuram International Airport Tomorrow

A Transformative Moment for Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on August 1, marking a transformative moment for Andhra Pradesh’s connectivity and economic landscape.

Built at a cost of ₹5,640 crore under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the greenfield airport is among the “fastest-completed greenfield international airports in India… nearly five months ahead of schedule,” according to an official release. Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL) on over 2,200 acres, the facility is designed to handle 6 million passengers annually in its first phase, with a master plan to expand capacity to 40 million passengers in the future.

Wide-Body Capability and Smart Airport Technology

The airport’s 3,800-metre Code-E runway is capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330 and Airbus A340, positioning it as a major international gateway on India’s east coast. The terminal incorporates cutting-edge technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), biometric passenger processing, automated baggage handling systems, and an Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC), ensuring a seamless and efficient travel experience.

Sustainability Meets Regional Architecture

Sustainability is at the core of the project, with features including a 5 MW solar power plant , rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The terminal has been registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and meets Green Building Standards. Its architectural design draws inspiration from Andhra Pradesh’s cultural heritage, with the roof profile reflecting traditional Chuttilu cottages and the landscapes of the Araku Valley, while its flowing form symbolises the graceful movement of a flying fish.

Cargo and Logistics Potential for North Andhra

Beyond aviation, the airport is expected to significantly strengthen North Andhra’s export ecosystem through a 25,000 metric tonne annual capacity cargo terminal , complete with temperature-controlled cold chain facilities for pharmaceuticals, marine products, and other high-value perishable goods. Integration with Visakhapatnam Port and industrial corridors is expected to establish Bhogapuram as a major air cargo and logistics hub on India’s east coast.

Political Significance and ₹17,900 Crore Development Push

The Prime Minister’s visit also carries significant political weight, marking his first public programme after the recent protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

PM Modi is also scheduled to dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹17,900 crore across Andhra Pradesh. These include the foundation stone of the ASIP Semiconductor Project at Visakhapatnam—Andhra Pradesh’s first semiconductor manufacturing facility approved under the India Semiconductor Mission—with an investment of over ₹460 crore, which will manufacture approximately 96 million semiconductor chips annually.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will launch major transmission projects worth over ₹5,550 crore for the Kurnool Renewable Energy Zone (4.5 GW), and inaugurate transmission systems for solar and wind energy zones in Anantapur and Kurnool, contributing to India’s energy transition and decarbonisation efforts. National Highway projects worth over ₹1,880 crore will also be dedicated and launched.

Grand Inauguration Programme at Bhogapuram

The Prime Minister is expected to arrive at the airport at around 10.45 a.m., where he will be accorded a grand welcome, with 13,000 students performing the tribal Dhimsa dance. He will undertake a walkthrough of the state-of-the-art passenger terminal at 11 a.m. before inaugurating the airport and unveiling plaques for various development projects at 11.30 a.m., followed by a public address.

Commercial Operations to Begin on August 17

Commercial operations at the airport are expected to begin on August 17 , when the existing Visakhapatnam Airport at INS Dega will cease civilian operations. The airport is poised to unlock new opportunities in tourism, hospitality, logistics, exports, aerospace, defence, and manufacturing across the erstwhile Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts.
