India Leads Asia’s Spiritual Travel Trend
India has emerged as Asia’s strongest market for spiritually motivated travel, according to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook. The report states that nearly 19% of Indian travellers are expected to take faith-based journeys in 2026, the highest share among the Asian countries surveyed.
This growing interest reflects India’s deep connection between travel, religion, culture and family traditions. Destinations such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Mathura, Vrindavan, Pushkar, Tirupati, Madurai and Rameswaram continue to attract travellers seeking spiritual experiences, temple visits, rituals and cultural immersion.
Major religious and cultural events have also boosted travel demand. Agoda noted strong accommodation search growth during Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, while Holi celebrations drove sharp interest in places such as Pushkar, Vrindavan and Mathura.
For the travel trade, spiritual tourism is now more than pilgrimage. It offers opportunities for hotels, tour operators, transport providers, guides and local businesses to create better packages, improve last-mile connectivity and offer more organised faith-led travel experiences.
