Severe Turbulence Injures 17 on Air India’s Phuket–Delhi Flight
An Air India flight travelling from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe turbulence on August 4, causing a sudden loss of altitude and scenes of panic inside the cabin. Flight AI2379 was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when the incident occurred during the cruise phase.
The unexpected movement reportedly threw some passengers and crew members from their positions, while loose objects were scattered through the cabin. Thirteen passengers and four crew members sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for medical assessment after arrival. Five passengers were discharged later that evening, while the remaining injured individuals continued receiving treatment.
Despite the frightening experience, the aircraft stabilised after the brief event and continued operating normally. It landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11:07 a.m., where medical and airline teams assisted those affected.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has begun examining the incident. Air India said it is cooperating with the investigation and providing support to the injured passengers and crew. The event once again highlights the importance of keeping seat belts fastened throughout a flight, even when the warning sign is switched off.
