Langkawi loses around 200,000 arrivals as international airlift weakens

This is the cautionary story of the day.

Langkawi recorded a year-on-year decline of approximately 200,000 tourist arrivals in the first half of 2026, with the loss of two international flights in May and the suspension of services from Bengaluru and Dubai contributing to the fall.

The island is now trying to diversify its airlift. Plans include 20 charter flights from Warsaw between November and March 2027 and discussions with Batik Air for Central Asian charters.

LADA is also offering up to US$20,000 in marketing support to operators committing to at least 10 flights per season and is working with Malaysia Airports and Tourism Malaysia to attract carriers from China and India, including discussions with Air India Express over a Delhi route.

The importance of the Indian market is already clear from Langkawi’s positioning among Indian travellers. Langkawi’s growing appeal to Indian travellers

Malaysia’s broader strategy is also increasingly focused on distributing tourism demand across secondary destinations rather than concentrating it in a few established hubs. Malaysia’s secondary-destination strategy

Trade takeaway: Destination marketing without adequate seats is increasingly proving ineffective.
