India, EU Launch Industry Coalition for Green Shipping Corridor

India and the European Union (EU) have launched an industry coalition to develop a green shipping corridor, bringing companies together to promote cleaner maritime trade routes and accelerate the transition to low-emission fuels.

Announced at the third edition of Sagar Manthan on October 7, the initiative aims to strengthen cooperation on sustainable shipping, cleaner fuel adoption and maritime infrastructure. Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar highlighted the need for resilient supply chains, private investment and a transition that includes emerging economies.

India also plans to increase renewable energy’s share in major ports’ overall energy consumption to more than 60% by 2030 and over 90% by 2047. Diesel-powered harbour tugs are progressively being replaced with green-powered vessels, while Deendayal Port, Paradip Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port have been identified as green hydrogen hubs.

The government aims to expand India’s port capacity to 10 billion tonnes annually by 2047, reinforcing the country’s ambitions in sustainable maritime infrastructure and international trade.

The coalition marks a step towards closer India–EU cooperation on maritime decarbonisation and cleaner global shipping.
