Germany Removes Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indians — But Entry Rules Still Apply

Germany has officially removed the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirement for Indian passport holders, allowing smoother international connections through major German hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.

The decision, confirmed by the German Embassy in New Delhi and published in the Federal Law Gazette, took effect from June 3, 2026. Indian travellers flying to a third country will now be able to transit through German airports without applying for a Schengen airport transit visa, significantly reducing paperwork, cost, and processing delays.

However, authorities have clarified an important limitation: this facility applies only to airside transit, meaning passengers must remain within the international transit zone of the airport.

Can travellers leave the airport with this transit exemption?

No. The transit exemption does not allow entry into Germany or the Schengen Area.

  • Travellers cannot pass immigration control
  • They cannot exit the airport or explore the city
  • They must remain inside the designated transit area until their connecting flight

To enter Germany—even for a short city visit—travellers still require a valid Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa.

B2B impact

The move is expected to benefit airlines, travel agencies, and corporate travel planners by:

  • Reducing transit friction on Europe–Asia routes
  • Lowering missed connection risks due to visa issues
  • Making Frankfurt and Munich more competitive global hub airports
  • Improving routing flexibility for airlines like Lufthansa and partner carriers

Key clarification

While the policy is being widely described as “visa-free transit,” it is not equivalent to visa-free entry into Germany. It is strictly a transit facilitation measure, similar to systems used in hubs like Doha or Dubai.
