Europe’s biometric travel debate moves from technology to passenger rights

Five major travel-industry organisations — ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA — are pushing EU policymakers to protect voluntary biometric travel within the bloc’s Digital Omnibus framework.

The coalition says biometrics can reduce repeated document checks and improve airport throughput, while insisting that passengers retain alternatives and control over their biometric data. An IATA survey cited by the coalition found that 74% of travellers were willing to use biometric data instead of repeatedly showing a passport or boarding pass.

Why B2B matters: biometric processing is becoming part of the competitive infrastructure of airports, airlines and border systems — not simply a passenger-convenience feature. Recent IATA trials on seamless contactless travel and IndiGo’s contactless international travel trial show how quickly this infrastructure is developing.

Europe handles more than a billion air travellers annually, making the regulatory outcome commercially significant for airports and technology suppliers.
