HAL–Safran Finalise Aravalli Helicopter Engine Contract

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and French aerospace major Safran have finalised the contract through their joint venture SAFHAL for the development of the Aravalli helicopter engine. The agreement represents another significant step in India’s ambition to strengthen its domestic aerospace manufacturing and engineering capabilities.

The engine programme is expected to contribute to the development of advanced propulsion technology for helicopters while supporting a broader ecosystem of suppliers, maintenance providers and engineering specialists. For the aviation industry, greater localisation of critical components could help reduce dependence on overseas supply chains over the long term.

The project also has significance for India’s growing MRO and regional aviation ecosystem, where indigenous technologies and skilled manpower are becoming increasingly important. The HAL–Safran partnership underlines the strategic role of international collaboration in building a stronger and more self-reliant Indian aerospace industry.
