AMARNATH YATRA BEGINS UNDER UNPRECEDENTED SECURITY SHIELD
The 57-day Amarnath Yatra officially commenced today, with the first batches of pilgrims departing from the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps amid spiritually charged chants of “Bam Bam Bhole.”
This year’s pilgrimage unfolds under the most stringent security protocols in recent memory. In a significant departure from previous years, private vehicles are barred from independent travel to Pahalgam or Baltal. All pilgrims must now join designated security convoys from Jammu onward, with movement restricted to National Highway-44 only—alternate routes such as Udhampur-Dhar Road and the Mughal Road remain closed.
Only pilgrims arriving at Lakhanpur, the gateway to J&K from Punjab, between 6 AM and 8 AM receive escorted passage within the protective security ring all the way to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. Late arrivals must halt at Lakhanpur, ensuring controlled movement along sensitive stretches.
The overhaul comes in the wake of heightened threats, including infiltration reports and the tragic Pahalgam attack in April 2025 that claimed 26 lives. Following Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror camps across the LoC, authorities have redesigned the operational blueprint to prioritise safety.
B2B Implications
For hospitality and tour operators in Jammu & Kashmir, the yatra represents a significant pilgrimage tourism season. With over 55,000 pilgrims accommodated en route through government lodges, temporary shelters, and community kitchens (langars), the regulated convoy system requires coordinated logistics. Travel trade stakeholders should note the tightened registration protocols, including on-the-spot registration facilities at the Tawi riverfront for pilgrims arriving without prior online or bank registration. The yatra will conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.
