Karnataka’s wage shock hits hospitality
Karnataka’s hotel and restaurant sector is warning of sharp menu price increases after the state revised minimum wages, with industry reporting an average increase of around 60%. Trade reporting says the Karnataka State Hotels Association expects everyday items such as idli and masala dosa to rise materially in response to higher labor costs.
The deeper story is margin pressure. Small and mid-sized hotels already face rising input costs, and the wage revision may force a reset in pricing across both local dining and packaged travel. For the B2B trade, this could weaken the “cheap India” value proposition in budget itineraries and push corporate buyers to accept higher contracted rates.
