Jamaica is positioning Montego Bay as more than a leisure destination. With a $694.375 million redevelopment plan for the Montego Bay Sports Complex, branded “The Hive,” the island is building a new hub for sports, fitness and wellness tourism.
The project, backed by a 25-year lease agreement, includes track refurbishments, recovery facilities, dormitory accommodation and multiple pitches for sports such as futsal, pickleball and paddle ball. The idea is to create an all-in-one destination where teams can train, stay and recover without having to move across multiple properties.
For Indian outbound travel specialists, this is an interesting development. Sports tourism is no longer limited to large tournaments or headline events. There is now room for youth teams, academies, school groups, wellness retreats and niche sporting camps. Jamaica may not be a mass-market destination for this segment yet, but that is exactly what makes it worth watching.
B2B takeaway
Sports tourism products work best when the venue, stay and recovery facilities are bundled together. Jamaica’s model offers a template for niche team travel.
