Tanzania Introduces Mandatory USD 44 Travel Insurance for Foreign Visitors
Tanzania will introduce a mandatory inbound travel insurance requirement for foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania from October 1, 2026. The insurance will cost USD 44 per person and provide coverage for medical emergencies for a period of up to 92 days.
The new requirement applies specifically to travellers entering Mainland Tanzania. Visitors entering through Zanzibar will need to obtain coverage through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, creating a distinction that travel companies handling combined Tanzania-Zanzibar itineraries will need to understand.
The policy is being introduced under new inbound travel insurance regulations issued by Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance. Travellers have been advised to obtain the required policy before arrival to minimise delays during entry procedures.
For Indian tour operators and destination management companies selling Tanzania safaris, Zanzibar holidays and combined East Africa programmes, the change introduces an additional pre-travel compliance step. Package pricing, client documentation and booking communications may need to clearly reflect the new insurance requirement.
With implementation beginning October 1, operators selling Tanzania departures in the coming months will need to incorporate the additional cost and entry requirement into their travel planning.
