Global Air Passenger Demand Falls 2.2% in May 2026
Global air travel softened in May 2026, with IATA reporting a 2.2% year-on-year fall in passenger demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres. Capacity also slipped 2.3%, while the global load factor reached a May record of 83.5%. IATA linked the overall decline mainly to the Middle East, where traffic dropped sharply amid the impact of regional conflict. However, demand outside the Middle East still grew 0.7%, showing that the wider market remained comparatively resilient. International traffic declined 1.6%, while domestic demand fell 3.1%, led by weaker performance in China and the United States. For airlines, high fuel costs and fares continue to test demand strength.
