Flores tourism recovers after earthquake

Tourism activity in Indonesia’s Flores region was reported to be recovering after the 15 August earthquake. Labuan Bajo and key areas of Komodo National Park had reopened, and daily visitor numbers at several sites exceeded 2,000 on 17 August.

Nevertheless, access remained uneven. Ende Airport had cancelled flights through 20 August, Wings Air services from Ruteng were suspended through 22 August, and several attractions—including Wae Rebo and Kelimutu National Park—remained closed for safety assessments. The recovery illustrates the importance of communicating open and closed sites separately rather than describing an entire destination as either “open” or “closed”.
