NEW ZEALAND: WALTER PEAK FIRE FORCES TOURIST EVACUATIONS NEAR QUEENSTOWN

A vegetation fire at Walter Peak Station burned through approximately 390 hectares of mountain slopes, forcing the evacuation of guests, staff, and contractors from the popular Walter Peak Homestead. The blaze, which reignited from a controlled burn-off, sent smoke plumes across Lake Wakatipu and cancelled RealNZ visitor trips.

Three helicopters and 15 firefighters worked the fireground, with a fire perimeter of nearly 6 kilometers remaining uncontained as of Tuesday night. MetService forecast gale-force northerlies up to 100kmh at higher elevations, complicating suppression efforts. A tour guide on site with 22 American tourists described the rapid escalation: “It burnt off the whole mountain… but it didn’t come close enough to burn the homestead down”.

B2B Takeaway: New Zealand’s adventure tourism operators face increasing climate-related operational risk. Agents selling Queenstown products should monitor fire seasons and maintain strong rebooking/refund flexibility clauses in contracts.
