Lufthansa, Munich Airport Expand Stopover Program to India, China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand

Lufthansa and Munich Airport have expanded their joint Stopover Program to passengers from India, China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand, enabling travellers to extend layovers in Munich for up to seven days.

The initiative, launched earlier this year for Singapore and the US, now covers five additional markets. Eligible passengers can transform connections into stays of 24 hours to seven days, exploring Bavaria’s capital and beyond.

The programme brings together 12 partners offering accommodation, car rentals, sightseeing and shopping. Heiko Reitz, Lufthansa Executive Board Member, said the move positions Munich as more than a transit hub, allowing international travellers to experience local culture and cuisine.

The strategy reflects a growing trend in global aviation and destination marketing, where airlines and airports increasingly collaborate to convert transit passengers into destination visitors.

As competition for international travellers intensifies, stopover programmes are becoming an important tool in the wider travel and tourism growth strategy adopted by airports and tourism boards worldwide.
