Char Dham Yatra Sets Record with Over 4.8 Million Pilgrims

India’s domestic pilgrimage tourism is rewriting records. Despite monsoon challenges, the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has seen over 4.8 million pilgrims (4,804,897) in the first 125 days, surpassing last year’s figure by a massive 522,634 devotees.

Yamunotri Dham set a new milestone, recording its highest-ever footfall of 668,163 devotees. Badrinath remains the most popular shrine with over 1.65 million visitors.

The surge highlights the growing importance of spiritual, cultural and regional tourism in India’s interior, where pilgrimage destinations are increasingly supporting local economies, transportation networks and hospitality infrastructure.

The trend also forms part of India’s wider heritage and cultural tourism opportunity, demonstrating how destinations outside the country’s major metropolitan centres can generate significant visitor demand.
