ATEC backs a stronger regional focus for Australia’s Working Holiday Maker programme

The Australian Tourism Export Council welcomed proposals to encourage Working Holiday Makers to spend more time in regional Australia, according to a report dated 9 October. The issue matters to tourism businesses that rely on seasonal staff and workers outside major metropolitan centres.

Why it matters: Labour availability affects the visitor experience just as much as transport and accommodation supply. Regional hotels, tour operators, attractions and hospitality businesses need sufficient staff to serve visitors during peak periods.

For inbound operators selling Australia, staffing conditions can influence service capacity and the feasibility of regional itineraries. The proposal should not be described as a new visa entitlement unless the relevant government rules confirm it.
