Japan demonstrates the new “fewer but richer” tourism equation

Japan‘s inbound visitor numbers fell for the first time in five years, but visitor spending continued to rise.

JNTO data show 21.08 million foreign visitors in January–June 2026, down 2% year-on-year, while tourism consumption increased 0.2%. The sharpest fall came from China, with Chinese arrivals down 56.4% year-on-year.

B2B impact: Japan is an important warning — and opportunity — for Asian destinations. Visitor volume alone is becoming a less useful measure of tourism health. Yield, length of stay, experience spend and source-market diversification matter more.
