India’s outbound market shifts towards shorter breaks
Indian travel platform Pickyourtrail reported a 40% year-on-year increase in long-weekend bookings. It also said repeat international travellers had nearly doubled and that more than half of customers were choosing customised itineraries over fixed packages.
The trend favours destinations reachable within a few hours of India, including Southeast Asia and the Gulf. It also strengthens the case for modular packaging: flights, hotels, experiences and transfers that can be combined quickly around public holidays.
Pros
• Short-haul destinations can attract more frequent Indian visitors.
• Airlines, hotels and attractions can create targeted long-weekend packages.
• Customised products may deliver higher margins than standard group tours.
• Travel businesses can use festival calendars to plan campaigns well in advance.
• Repeat travellers may spend more on experiences, dining and premium accommodation.
Cons
• Short trips can be highly price-sensitive and vulnerable to airfare increases.
• Demand may be concentrated around a small number of public holidays.
• Frequent short-haul travel can increase pressure on airport and destination infrastructure.
• Customisation may raise operational complexity for agents and suppliers.
• Sudden demand spikes can push up hotel rates and reduce availability.
