Sustainability Merger: Airbus, Safran, and Technip Energies Unite for SAF

Decarbonization moved from the ESG report to the assembly line today. Technip Energies, Airbus, Safran, and Tereos announced a joint venture agreement for the “Rebound” project at the Port of Dunkirk, France .

The Stats

Once operational, the facility will produce 145,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) annually using Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) technology . This aligns with EU mandates requiring 70% SAF blends at all EU airports by 2050. For corporate travel managers and cargo operators, this signals a tangible increase in SAF availability in Europe by 2028, potentially easing compliance with Scope 3 emission targets.

Julie Kitcher, Chief Sustainability Officer at Airbus, called the project “a vote of confidence in SAF and in Europe’s ability to lead” .

Why this isn’t just greenwashing

The AtJ pathway uses advanced ethanol derived from agricultural and forestry residues, avoiding the food-vs-fuel debate. For B2B distributors and aviation procurement heads, the final investment decision for Rebound is slated for the second half of 2026 . If successful, it will create a scalable template for converting bio-mass into drop-in jet fuel, usable in existing engines without modifications.
