WTTC: The Voice of the Private Sector

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents over 200 of the world’s leading travel and tourism companies, just made a monumental move .

    A Historic Relocation to Madrid

In a significant strategic shift, the WTTC has officially relocated its global headquarters from London to     Madrid    . After a competitive selection process that considered cities like Geneva, Paris, and Dubai, the Spanish capital was chosen .

Why it Matters:     This move physically places the WTTC in the same city as UN Tourism, effectively creating a new global axis for tourism governance. WTTC President & CEO Gloria Guevara stated that from Madrid, the organization will “set the global agenda and define the strategic direction” for the private sector .

Strategic Synergy:     The co-location is expected to foster unprecedented collaboration between the public (UN Tourism) and private (WTTC) sectors, which is critical for tackling challenges like sustainable infrastructure and investment.

    High-Level Action on Investment

Fresh off the relocation, WTTC convened a high-level meeting in Madrid, bringing together industry titans and ministers to tackle global investment challenges .

The Numbers:     The meeting underscored the sector’s massive economic footprint: an estimated     $11.7 trillion contribution to global GDP     in 2025 (10.3% of total), supporting 1 in 9 jobs. Crucially, the sector is projected to create     91 million new jobs     over the next decade .

Public-Private Partnerships:     A core theme was the necessity of     public-private partnerships     to unlock private capital, develop resilient infrastructure, and ensure long-term, sustainable growth .

Inclusive Growth:     Leaders like Shaikha Al Nowais (UN Tourism Secretary-General) and Mara Lezama (Governor of Quintana Roo) emphasized that tourism growth must be inclusive, promoting rural and community-based tourism alongside major developments .

The world’s top global tourism organizations are not just maintaining the status quo; they are actively reshaping it.

WTTC     is physically aligning itself with the UN to turbocharge public-private collaboration and tackle investment challenges.

The message is clear: global tourism governance is consolidating, collaborating, and becoming more strategic than ever before.
