CopenPay Went Global Today. Here is Why Your Next Holiday Will Feel Like a Job Interview

Two years ago, when Copenhagen announced it would give you a free coffee for picking up trash, the cynical half of the travel industry rolled its eyes. “Great,” we said. “Now I have to work for my latte.”

But as of January 15, 2026, the joke is on us. The pilot program, formerly known as CopenPay, has officially graduated. It is now DestinationPay, an open-source model that has just been adopted by Berlin and Normandy. The “good deed economy” isn’t a fad anymore; it is the new standard for Northern Europe.

The “Carrot” vs. The “Stick” While Venice is busy charging entry fees (the stick), Copenhagen has doubled down on the carrot. The 2026 winter edition of the scheme is more sophisticated than the “trash-for-pizza” days of 2024.

  • The New Currency: It’s no longer just about litter. Show a train ticket instead of a boarding pass? Free entry to the National Museum. Volunteer for two hours at the Østergro urban farm? You get a “fast pass” for the Tivoli Gardens lines.
  • The Social Credit Question: There is a lingering Orwellian aftertaste to all this. Do we really want our holidays to be gamified? There is something unnerving about a destination grading your behavior.
