The “Last Call” for Free Entry and The Green Hangover
If you have a US, Canadian, or Australian passport, stop procrastinating. You are currently in the “Golden Window.” After years of “will they, won’t they,” the Brazilian government has set the date. On April 10, 2026, the visa curtain falls again. If you are here now (January), you are getting the best of Brazil: free entry, pre-Carnival chaos, and a country that is just recovering from hosting the world to save the planet.
The Visa Countdown (April 10 Deadline)
- The Situation: You have exactly 82 days left to enter Brazil without a visa.
- The Reality: The “e-Visa” website is live, but if you enter before April 10, you can skip the $80 fee and the paperwork. The government keeps postponing this to save the tourism numbers, but the April 2026 deadline looks firm.
- The Move: Book your trip for February or March. Do not push it to Easter. If you land on April 11 without the sticker, you are flying home.
The Party Before The Party: Pre-Carnival
Carnival is early this year (Feb 13–17, 2026).
- The Vibe: That means right now (mid-January) is officially “Pre-Carnival.”
- The Secret: This is actually better than the main event. The Blocos (street parties) in Rio and São Paulo are running every weekend. They are free, less crowded than the official parade days, and just as wild.
- The Safety Warning: Watch your drink. There has been a spike in methanol poisoning and drink spiking reports in Lapa and Copacabana this summer. Buy beer in sealed cans from vendors you watch open them. Do not accept “jungle juice” from a friendly stranger.
The “New” Amazon Capital: Belém
In November 2025, the world descended on Belém for COP30. Now that the diplomats have left, you get the upgrades.
- The city is exhausted but shiny. The “COP Legacy” infrastructure—new electric buses, the renovated Ver-o-Peso Market, and the upgraded hotel zones—is all yours.
- The Experience: It used to be a struggle to find high-end accommodation here; now there is a surplus. Go eat tacacá by the river in a city that finally has the infrastructure to match its culture.
- The Warning: It is the Amazon. It is humid, and the Dengue risk (specifically the DENV-2 strain) is elevated this January. Wear the DEET.
Brazil in January 2026 is a “Final Sale.” You are getting the visa-free perks, the brand-new infrastructure in the North, and the pre-Carnival energy in the South.
