Normandy Just Copied Denmark’s Homework. But Can You “Gamify” D-Day?

It is one thing to offer a free coffee for cycling in Copenhagen. It is quite another to offer a discount on a museum ticket for picking up plastic on Omaha Beach.

As of this morning, January 15, the Normandy Region has officially joined the “DestinationPay” alliance, the open-source sustainability network launched by Denmark. The premise is identical: Travelers earn “credits” for green actions—taking the train instead of a rental car, volunteering for beach cleanups, or eating at “Zero Kilometer” restaurants. These credits can then be swapped for fast-track entry to the Caen Memorial or exclusive tours of the Mont Saint-Michel abbey.

Let’s be honest: There is something jarring about “gamifying” hallowed ground. The backlash in Bayeux has been swift. Local operators argue that “gamifying” sites of mourning cheapens the experience, effectively handing out gold stars to tourists for doing the bare minimum of not destroying them. There is also the logistical nightmare. Reports from the press demo in Rouen indicate the app is already struggling with stability issues. If this is going to work, the tech needs to be as robust as the bunkers.

The reality is that Normandy is drowning in overtourism. The cliffs at Étretat are eroding under the weight of Instagrammers; the roads to the landing beaches are choked with diesel buses. If this scheme convinces even 10% of visitors to take the train from Paris and walk the coastal paths instead of driving, it’s a victory. On the beaches near Arromanches, the shift is already visible. Early adopters of the scheme—often students—are competing to see who can fill their trash bags fastest. It might look clumsy, but it is engaged. France is trying to teach a new generation that remembering history also means protecting the land it happened on. And that is a lesson worth a few free museum tickets.
