Kerala: A Global Model for Sustainable Tourism
Kerala has redefined tourism by placing sustainability and community welfare at its core. Far beyond scenic beauty, “God’s Own Country” champions a people-first model through its pioneering Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission on Regional basis. Established in 2017, this state-wide initiative empowers local communities by creating over 26,000 RT units, with a remarkable 80% led by women, supporting nearly 1.5 lakh families. This democratization of tourism ensures economic benefits flow directly to villages through farm tourism, cultural experiences, and local cuisine.
Simultaneously, Kerala is fiercely protecting its environment. Major initiatives like the “Clean Destination Campaign” enforce plastic bans and waste minimization in hotspots like Munnar and Kovalam. Traditional industries are being reinvented, with plans to transform aquaculture farms into carbon-neutral eco-tourism hubs. New projects, from the sprawling Thrissur Zoological Park to the eco-tourism venture at Aanathazhchira, integrate green energy and conservation.
With destinations like Beypore designated as international models for responsible tourism and a strategic Vision 2031 roadmap for inclusive growth, Kerala proves that tourism can be a powerful force for good(sustainably)—where the welfare of the people and the planet is the true measure of success.
