Discovering the Heritage of “God’s Own Country”

Heritage tourism in Kerala is a journey through a vibrant, living past, carefully preserved through major government initiatives and immersive experiences. It is defined by ambitious projects like the Muziris Heritage Project, which revives the ancient port’s multicultural legacy through restored synagogues, palaces, and the oldest mosque in India. Similarly, the Thalassery and Alappuzha projects curate colonial history and traditional industries into accessible circuits.

Beyond monuments, Kerala offers curated experiential trails. The newly launched “Spice Journey” trails, my personal favourites, for instance, retrace the ancient maritime trade routes that once connected the state to the world. These paths lead travellers to vernacular architectural wonders like the Agraharams of Kalpathy and ancestral Tharavadus. The experience is completed by witnessing living art forms like Theyyam and Kathakali, and savouring unique culinary traditions like Mappila cuisine, making Kerala’s heritage a truly immersive affair.
